Dubai Visits Visa Online Application Form
Quick answer: Åland Islands residents travel on a Finnish passport, and Finland sits on the UAE's visa-free list. That means you can fly to Dubai and stay up to 90 days without applying for any visa beforehand — no separate "Ålandic" visa process exists.
Do Åland Islands Citizens Need a Dubai Visa?
Åland doesn't issue its own citizenship. Everyone in the islands, from Mariehamn to the outer archipelago, holds Finnish nationality, and some residents carry a passport with an Åland-marked cover rather than the standard one. For UAE immigration, the two are identical — what counts is the Finnish nationality on the data page, not which office issued the booklet.
Finland is on the UAE's visa-free list for tourism, capped at 90 days per visit. You'll need a passport valid for at least six months beyond arrival and proof of onward travel, but there's no application, fee, or approval to arrange beforehand.
One practical note: the Finnish Immigration Service doesn't keep a permanent office in Åland — it visits the State Department of Åland in Mariehamn roughly every six to seven weeks. If your passport is close to expiry before a trip, book that slot early or use a mainland service point instead.
Getting to Dubai from Åland
There's no international departure gate on the islands. Mariehamn Airport (MHQ) connects only to Stockholm, Turku, and Helsinki, so every Dubai trip starts with one of those legs — by air in under an hour, or by Viking Line, Tallink Silja, or Eckerö Linjen ferry for the archipelago route.
From Helsinki, the journey just got shorter. From 1 October 2026, Emirates launches its first year-round, daily non-stop service between Dubai and Helsinki — EK167 departs Dubai at 08:45, landing in Helsinki at 14:55; the return, EK168, leaves Helsinki at 16:45 and reaches Dubai International Airport at 00:20 the next day, flown on an Airbus A350. Until now, Finnair was the only carrier on this route, and only in winter, so routing through Helsinki no longer means an extra stop in a third city.
Build in a comfortable buffer for the Åland-to-Helsinki leg, especially around midsummer and Christmas, when both flights and ferries fill up fast on limited daily schedules.
Currency and Spending in Dubai
Åland, like the rest of Finland, uses the euro, while Dubai runs on the UAE dirham (AED). The rate moves daily but has generally sat close to €1 = AED 4, give or take — worth checking a live rate shortly before you travel rather than relying on a fixed figure. Major international cards are accepted almost everywhere in Dubai, and ATMs are widely available, so there's little need to carry large amounts of cash from home.
Best Time to Visit Dubai from Åland
Åland's winter is short on daylight and often locked in ice across the archipelago ferry routes — a sharp contrast to Dubai's cooler season from November to March, when daytime temperatures are comfortable for sightseeing, desert trips, and time outdoors. That window is also Dubai's busiest tourist period, so book accommodation and popular attractions ahead. If you're travelling in June through September instead, expect high heat and humidity, with most activity shifting indoors or to the evening.
UAE Embassy Support for Åland Residents
With a population of around 30,000 spread across one town and the archipelago, Åland has no diplomatic missions of its own. The nearest and only UAE embassy covering Finland is in Helsinki:
| Detail | Information |
|---|---|
| Address | Lönnrotinkatu 11 (5th Floor), 00120 Helsinki, Finland |
| Phone | +358 10 212 3350 |
| Working hours | Monday–Friday, 9:00 AM–4:00 PM |
| Coverage | All of Finland, including Åland, plus Estonia since June 2024 |
The mission is young — it opened in October 2023 — and it's the office to contact for anything beyond simple tourism, such as document attestation or emergency consular help.
What Makes Travel From Åland Different
- No separate nationality to declare: Even with an Åland-marked cover, you're a Finnish national at the border — nothing extra to explain to UAE immigration.
- Autonomy doesn't affect visa status: Åland's demilitarised, self-governing status dates to a 1921 League of Nations ruling, but visa-free access to Dubai comes from Finland's EU membership, not Åland's own arrangements.
- Routing takes planning: With no scheduled Gulf connection from Mariehamn, your itinerary really has two legs — island to mainland, then mainland to Dubai — so check both schedules together before booking.
