For Virgin Islanders, the UAE entry rule depends on which British passport you carry. A full British citizen passport and a BVI-issued British Overseas Territories Citizen (BOTC) passport are treated very differently at Dubai immigration. Check the type before you book anything.
Two Passports, Two Different Rules
Most BOTCs connected with the BVI became British citizens automatically on 21 May 2002, under the British Overseas Territories Act. As a result, many Virgin Islanders can hold either a BVI passport or a full British citizen passport.
Full British Citizen Passport
This passport gets a free visit visa on arrival in the UAE. The UK government says the visa is valid for up to 90 days over a 180-day period, counted from your first entry. Your passport must be valid for at least 6 months after the day you arrive.
BVI (BOTC) Passport
The British Virgin Islands passport holders Dubai visa works differently. A BOTC passport does not qualify for the free arrival stamp unless it carries a Certificate of Entitlement to the Right of Abode in the UK. Without that certificate, you need an approvedDubai tourist visa from British Virgin Islands before you travel.
The UK Foreign Office guidance covers only full British citizen passports. For any other type, it tells travellers to contact the UAE Embassy in the UK. If you need a pre-arranged visa, see our guide on how to apply for a Dubai visit visa.
Checklist Before You Leave Tortola
These are the Dubai visa requirements for British Virgin Islandstravellers to check:
-
Look at the nationality line in your passport: "British Citizen" or "British Overseas Territories Citizen".
-
Make sure the passport is valid for at least 6 months from your arrival date.
-
With a BOTC passport and no right-of-abode certificate, get your UAE visa approved first.
-
Have your return ticket and hotel booking ready.
Getting from the BVI to Dubai
There are no long-haul flights from Terrance B. Lettsome International Airport on Beef Island. The first leg is a short regional flight. American Eagle flies nonstop to Miami, and regional carriers fly to San Juan, Antigua, St Maarten and Barbados. From these hubs you connect to Dubai, usually through the United States or London.
Watch the US Connection
Changing planes in the US means going through US immigration. Full British citizen passport holders normally use ESTA. BVI passport holders can enter the US through the US Virgin Islands with a police Certificate of Good Conduct. Other routes, including a direct flight to Miami, usually need a US visa. Check what applies to you before you book.
Plans can change at short notice in the islands. If your dates move and you need a visa quickly, use our express visa application for Dubai.
US Dollars Make Budgeting Easy
The BVI uses the US dollar, and the UAE dirham is pegged to it at about 3.67 AED to 1 USD. What you spend in dirhams is simple to convert, and the rate does not change. US dollar cash is easy to exchange in Dubai, and cards work almost everywhere.
Choosing Your Travel Dates
Dubai is 8 hours ahead of the BVI all year. November to March is the best time to visit, with warm days and cooler nights. Summer in Dubai is much hotter than island summers, often above 40°C. Your hurricane season (June to November) overlaps with Dubai's hot months, so a winter trip suits both.
UAE Embassy and Consular Help
The UAE has no embassy or consulate in the British Virgin Islands. The UK handles the Territory's foreign affairs, so the UK Foreign Office points travellers to the UAE Embassy in London:
-
Address: 1-2 Grosvenor Crescent, London SW1X 7EE
-
Phone: +44 20 7581 1281
-
Email: LondonEMB.info@mofa.gov.ae
-
UAE 24/7 line: +971 800 44444
If you get into trouble in the UAE, British consular staff there can help. Once you have applied for a visa, check your Dubai visa status before you fly.
In short, the Dubai visa for British Virgin Islands citizens depends on the passport, not on where you live.
